Further to Rosemarie Scicluna’s letter (September 19) I never said that the pigeons themselves are a threat to health but their droppings surely are.

I do not know in which part of Sliema she lives but if there are no pigeons dirtying roads, pavements, doorsteps etc near her then she’s one lucky lady.

Barely two weeks after the local council sent someone to power-wash the pavements, they are once again covered in pigeon dirt. If dog faeces is a health threat then so are pigeon droppings, especially in those large quantities.

I do not like killing anything and I did not ask the council to get rid of them by killing them but by rounding them up and perhaps letting them loose in the countryside though I’ve been told that if they were bred here then they’ll be back.

The other way to keep streets and pavements clean is to have them power-washed weekly. Unless the council allocates some money for this, then every day there’ll be more of it and that I am sure is a health hazard.

Yes we humans are doing our level best to pollute this planet of ours, including this tiny and very beautiful island, so that’s why we must all do our little bit to help eliminate pollution as muchas possible.

And, yes, I love animals and wouldn’t hurt any of them but that doesn’t mean I’m going to just moan and do nothing about it.

All we need now is for more Sliema residents to write in and keep phoning and badgering the local council until something permanent is done about it.
