Stephanie Cassar, the only woman trap shooter in the country, was a step away from breaking into the top three in an official competition yesterday as the Malta Shooting Sport Federation hosted the LLMA Selection shoot at its ranges in Bidnija.

The competition was won by George Mifsud who only missed one clay as he beat Mario Zammit 14-13 in the gold medal shoot-off.

Cassar made it to the finals after hitting 103 clays from a possible 125 in the qualifying rounds of the competition held in the morning.

However, she was unable to finish her day with a place on the podium after going down to Brian Galea 13-8 in the play-off for third place, having also been close to qualifying for the gold medal match.

Galea had joined the top six with the best round in qualifying after hitting 118 points.

Cassar was the top shooter in Class C yesterday with 40 hits from a possible 50.
