In his letter objecting to an article by Petra Caruana Dingli, Silvan Agius (The Sunday Times of Malta, May 17) from the Ministry for Social Dialogue tried to make readers believe that the Joseph Muscat government he forms part of has turned Malta into a paradise of equality. The truth cannot be more different than that.

The Muscat government is an administration that once elected forgot its pre-election mantras that it will be a government for all the Maltese. Post-election it has looked after those it considers its own, while discriminating against all others.

Rather than ushering in an environment that “enhances equality further” the Muscat government uses patronage and discrimination as a tool of control. All the spin by the government and its spokespersons cannot hide the fact that this a government that believes in ‘jobs for boys’.

The Muscat government creates posts for those it considers its own, the wife of Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, Sai Mizzi, being the most well-known case. Others are promoted either because they are friends of Muscat or are known Labour Party loyalists.

Cyrus Engerer, who in spite of a criminal conviction was appointed by Muscat to a senior post in Brussels, and Mario Cutajar, the head of the civil service, a post that requires someone above politics, are typical examples. The list in the short two-year period is endless.

The protests we can hear are coming from people whose rights have been trampled upon. No amount of spin by the likes of political appointees such as Agius will hide that fact.
