A Senglea man yesterday admitted throwing a dog into a well because his barks bothered him but then retracted his plea after he was told he was going to jail.

The animal was saved on Friday thanks to prompt action by the police. Eugenio Galea, 56, from Senglea, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty but when Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona told him he was going to jail, he retracted his guilty plea and instead pleaded not guilty.

The man, who said he worked for the local council, was granted bail against a €1,000 personal guarantee. Police inspector Josric Mifsud prosecuted. Lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace appeared for the man.
