Eddie Privitera, in his letter ‘Celebrating an electoral defeat’ (April 22), said the Nationalist Party suffered yet another ‘historical defeat’ on April 11. What he failed to mention was that in the local council elections held on March 10, 2012, the Malta Labour Party obtained 57.3 per cent of valid votes cast whereas during a similar round of local council elections (held on April 11), it only obtained 53.5 per cent of valid votes cast.

This is the ‘historical defeat’ referred to by Privitera.

What he is trying to hide is the fact that the PN obtained a positive result in Labour strongholds, such as Birżebbuġa, Kirkop, Marsaxlokk and Żurrieq. The truth of the matter is that the proverbial emperor (read Prime Minister), cut off in his ivory tower, has been cut down to size and, after only a two-year term, has (metaphorically speaking) become a non-entity.
