Balzan brushed aside the feeble challenge of Tarxien Rainbows as they coasted to a 5-0 victory at the Tedesco Stadium.

The Reds were off to a flier and took the lead after only three minutes.

Osa Ice-Cream Guobadia picked Gianmarco Piccioni inside the area and the Italian quickly set up Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza who beat Sean Mintoff with a firm drive.

Tarxien were rattled and six minutes later Lydon Micallef showed great footwork to move past two opponents before serving Mifsud Triganza who hit a thumping drive that gave no chance to Mintoff.

The Rainbows’ response produced a Triston Caruana shot that was blocked by Steve Sultana, the Balzan goalkeeper on 16 minutes.

Things got worse for Tarxien on 22 minutes  when Mifsud Triganza sent a low cross inside the area and Ryan Darmanin was the quickest to react to divert the ball past Mintoff.

Balzan added a fourth goal six minutes from the break. They won a free-kick from which Guobadia’s cross was met by Steve Bezzina who headed past Mintoff.

Balzan wrapped up the points on 74 minutes when Piccioni sped into the before hitting a rasping drive that flew into the net via the bar.

Balzan midfielder Lydon Micallef was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
