Ecology in the Med

‘Invasions, extinctions, and the threat of climate change to eastern Mediterranean reefs’ is the title of a public lecture to be held tomorrow from 6 to 7pm at the NBRR of the University’s Department of Biology.

The speaker is Gil Rilov, senior scientist and head of the marine community ecology lab, National Institute of Oceanography, Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institute.

Rilov will demonstrate the profound changes that the unique and fragile marine reef ecosystems of the eastern Mediterranean underwent in the past century, including dominance by invasive species, the disappearance of ecologically-important species and impacts of overfishing. These changes will be placed within the context of climate change, especially ocean warming.

He will reveal the novel experimental techniques developed in his laboratory to test the effects of global warming, ocean acidification and sea level rise.

Attendance is free of charge. To attend call Michaela Psaila Custo on 2340 2272 or e-mail michaela.stivala@um.edu.mt.
