A three-month-old dolphin that was lost and disoriented after being separated from its mother was rescued from the rough seas yesterday.

The young striped dolphin sustained cuts as waves kept pushing it against the rocks. It was taken to an inshore tank for further monitoring. In a statement, Nature Trust (Malta) said it received reports that the dolphin was spotted in Qawra.

With the help of the Animal Welfare Department and the police, the dolphin was brought ashore and passed on to the Nature Trust Wildlife Rescue Team, Mepa as the competent authority for protected species, and Anthony Gruppetta as the expert vet for examination.

The dolphin is being kept for observation and necessary treatment under the supervision of the Veterinary Services Department.
