Wayne Rooney is chasing records and could shortly establish himself as the most decorated player in English football history.
Against Slovenia next month he is expected to win his 100th cap for the national team, putting him in prime position to reach and, perhaps, eclipse Peter Shilton’s all-time record of 125 appearances.
The scoring record for England is also within Rooney’s sights as currently he’s six short of Bobby Charlton’s total of 49 in the Three Lions shirt.
England’s top marksmen:
49 – Bobby Charlton (Manchester United) in 106 appearances.
48 – Gary Lineker (Leicester, Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham) in 80 appearances.
44 – Jimmy Greaves (Chelsea, Tottenham) in 57 appearances.
43 – Wayne Rooney (Everton, Manchester United) in 99 appearances.
40 – Michael Owen (Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester United) in 89 appearances.
30 – Tom Finney (Preston) in 76 appearances.
30 – Nat Lofthouse (Bolton) in 33 appearances.
30 – Alan Shearer (Southampton, Blackburn, Newcastle) in 63 appearances.
29 – Frank Lampard (Chelsea) in 106 appearances.
28 – Steve Bloomer (Derby, Middlesbrough) in 23 appearances.
28 – Vivian Woodward (Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea) in 23 appearances.
Rooney earned his 99th cap in the European qualification match against Estonia away, scoring the all-important goal in a 1-0 win.
The 29-year-old will become the youngest player to reach 100 England caps when Roy Hodgson’s men play Slovenia on Nov. 15.
Rooney said he intends to play on after Euro 2016 in France.
