The former St Luke’s Hospital car park, neglected since the hospital closed down in 2008, will be given a new lease of life following a devolution agreement between the government and Pietà local council.

However, this will come at a cost to motorists who will no longer be able to park for free. It can take 260 vehicles.

The three-year devolution agreement was unveiled yesterday morning during a visit by Parliamentary Secretary for Planning Michael Falzon.

Pietà mayor Keith Tanti said 50 parking spaces would be reserved for residents at no cost. The agreement, he said, would also mean an additional stream of revenue.

Mr Tanti said the fees would be made public once the tender for the management of the facility had been allotted. The chosen operator will be also responsible for the maintenance and upkeep.
