A fire in a semi-basement store of the Radisson Blu hotel in St Julian's produced a pall of smoke seen from various localities early this afternoon.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m. and was brought under control in about an hour. The fire brigade was deployed, with the firemen using both foam and water.

All hotel guests were evacuated as a precaution, but they had to be moved away from the fire emergency assembly area since it was above the site of the fire. Coincidentally staff held a fire drill this morning to check their equipment.

Winston Zahra, managing director of the Island Hotels Group, which operate the hotel, said no one was injured and no one was missing.

The store is used for catering equipment and diesel used for heating and emergency generators.  It is close to an underground car park.

The hotel is due to undergo a major refurbishment this autumn and winter.
