I refer to the letters entitled ‘Anarchy in Xlendi’ (March 26) and ‘Gozo is great but shame about Xlendi’ (April 5).

I have been instructed by the Xlendi administrative committee and the Munxar local council to write the following.

Any encroachment for tables and chairs is granted with specific conditions, among which a right for pedestrian passage as well as the specific area to be used. The pertinent authorities are responsible for seeing that any encroachment goes through the proper application and screening process, aided by enforcement officers within the same authorities. Both Munxar local council and Xlendi administrative committee cannot, and do not, have the administrative means to enforce these areas.

Following numerous complaints on abuses, it was recently decided by the Xlendi administrative committee (on February 24) to request meetings with the authorities and the ministers concerned to find a workable balance between the residents’ rights, the commercial sector, fishermen and tourists visiting Xlendi Bay.
