The famous reliquary believed to contain the blood of St Lawrence will be in Gozo at the end of July, the San Lawrenz parish website has announced.

It will be the first time that the reliquary will be taken out of the village of Amaseno in Italy, where it is held.

The blood is said to liquefy on August 10, the day of St Lawrence’s martyrdom. The reliquary has been verified by scientists to contain true blood, along with a piece of skin and some fat and ash.

The announcement that the reliquary will be brought to Gozo was made by Fr Ignatius Borg, former parish priest of San Lawrenz.

The current parish priest, Fr Charles Sultana, said this was a blessing for the community that the parish had to prepare for.
