French tabloid Closer has alleged that President Francois Hollande is having an affair with film actress Julie Gayet, while Parisians brush off story.

Hollande threatened to sue the magazine for breach of privacy but did not deny the report.

The weekly tabloid Closer published photos that purportedly shows a man wearing a helmet -- said to be Hollande -- arriving on a scooter outside an apartment in Paris.

Parisians brushed off the story. French politicians have been known to have affairs in the past, bearing little impact on public opinion.

"I find this quite low, frankly it's not interesting."

Gayet supported Hollande's presidential campaign in 2012. She had filed a complaint for breach of privacy last year after rumours of an affair with the president were publicised.

Hollande is in a relationship with ex-journalist Valerie Trierweiler and has four children with previous partner, fellow Socialist politician Segolene Royal.
