The Times of Malta reports on the life sentence handed to a man who killed the partner of his former wife. It reports how it was said in court that the victim died for loving a woman.

The Times of Malta and the Malta Independent also report how the prime minister ordered the removal of a tent set up on Mater Dei Hospital grounds to receive patients.

In-Nazzjon says the setting up of the tent showed a government panic manifesting itself with insensitive decisions.

l-orizzont reports that  the members of the MCESD are not against the principles of the citizenship scheme..

The overseas press

The Daily Star announces Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet US Secretary of State John Kerry and Lahdar Brahimi, special envoy of the Arab League and the UN on Syria, in Paris on Monday. Their encounter comes ahead of the international conference on Syria to be held on January 22 in Montreux, Switzerland. The three are expected to discuss a roadmap intended to lead to an end to the Syrian conflict, and concerns over the future of President Bashar al-Assad and the role of the Syrian opposition in any transition.

The Washington Post reports the United States has listed Ansar al Sharia, the Al Qaeda-linked group held responsible for an attack in Benghazi in which US Ambassador Christ Stevens and three other US citizens were killed, as a terrorist organisation. Washington has blacklisted two branches of the group active in Benghazi and Darnah, and a third in Tunisia.

Tribune de Genève says Iran and world power representatives agreed  on how to implement a landmark deal on containing Tehran's nuclear programme, but stamps of approval from each country are still needed before it can take effect. 

Al Ahram reports three people have been killed in demonstrations in support of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. The clashes came four days before a referendum on a new constitution, which the Islamists want to boycott. Two protesters were killed in Suez in fights between Morsi supporters and opponents, while the third died in Alexandria.

Fox News says the list of West Virginia customers being asked to avoid using water is growing because of a chemical spill into the Elk River in Charleston. West Virginia American Water expanded its advisory to nine counties last night, up from an original five. The company’s customers in those areas have been asked not to drink, bathe, cook or wash clothes in the water and to only use it for flushing. There have been no immediate reports of illnesses from the spill.

La Sicilia reports 105 African migrants arrived in Augusta on Friday after the Italian navy rescued them from a listing motorised dinghy. The migrants are said to be from Senegal, Mali, Gambia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Over 6,500 people have been rescued since mid-October when Italy stepped up Mediterranean patrols after more than 360 migrants drowned off Lampedusa earlier that month in one of the worst tragedies of Europe's migrant crisis.

Avvenire says the Vatican has received a request to beatify Fr Matteo Ricci, an Italian Jesuit priest favoured by Pope Francis whose attempts to evangelise China in the 16th century were thwarted by the Church. The Jesuit, who died in Beijing in 1610, embodied a new approach to spreading the Catholic faith into the local culture in China. But despite his initial success in spreading the Christian word, the Vatican distrusted his idea of mixing Catholic dogma with Chinese culture.

According to Corriere della Sera, former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi wants to head his conservative Forza Italia party's list of candidates in every Italian region in May's European elections. At a meeting of Forza Italia regional coordinators in Rome yesterday, he also claimed there would be snap Italian general election in late May and that his party would win.
