Malta and Russia have ironed out problems about the adoption of Russian children, the government said today.

The issue was discussed at a meeting between Foreign Minister George Vella and Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Aleksey Meshkov.

Russia had been concerned about the Civil Unions law and the possibility that Russian children may be adopted by gay couples.

Dr Vella said Malta was recognising Russia's right to analyse all adoption cases and adoptions would be stopped on a case by case basis when there was an objection. This right had always existed.

Russian officials may also visit the children to see their living conditions.

TASK FORCE

The two ministers also agreed to set up a task force to discuss political and business relations, including tourism.
