Philip Zahra, 41 of Naxxar today pleaded not guilty to assaulting and slightly injuring Labour MP Joe Sammut.

Dr Sammut said he reported the incident as soon as it took place yesterday. It took place at about 2.30 p.m. He had been driving and stopped near Luxol grounds. A man approached his car holding a knife.

He told the man: "Are you crazy," and the man punched him on the face and left the scene. He then told him 'Enjoy it'.

Dr Sammut said the man was accompanied by a woman. He  noted the number of the aggressor's car and reported the case.

He did not know the aggressor and never met him before, Nor did he know the motivation of the incident.

Mr Zahra was granted bail against a deposit of €500 and personal guarantee of €2,000.
