Academic staff from the International Ocean Institute-Malta Operational Centre (IOI-MOC) at the University of Malta recently gave six presentations on various aspects of its oceanographic work during the 40th edition of CIESM, the flagship congress of the Mediterranean Science Commission, held in Marseille, France.

The presentations dealt with the development of a prototype 2D coupled model for the Dwejra marine protected area, the discovery of submerged canyons and landslides on the Malta escarpment, oil spill risk assessment for the Maltese coastline, monitoring of currents in the Malta-Sicily Channel using the Calypso project radars and the genetics of the pearl oyster – Pinctada radiata – a non-indigenous mollusc hailing from the Indo-Pacific region.

The IOI-MOC delegation was composed of Joel Azzopardi, Alana Bonnici, Alan Deidun, Aldo Drago, Adam Gauci and Aaron Micallef.
