The Technical Regulations Division of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has announced that a number of motorcycle helmets that pose a serious risk to users have been found on the market.

The helmets, termed ‘half helmets’ (pictured), do not conform to the applicable European legislation and do not offer adequate protection to the ears and sides of the head. Hence, in the event of an accident, these parts of the body are not adequately protected, and this could result in the user suffering trauma on the exposed parts of the body.

The MCCAA advises owners of these helmets to ensure they are not used and to return them to the shop they were purchased from. Economic operators who have placed these products on the market are ordered to recall the helmets and to advise their clients to return them to the place of purchase. Any economic operator found to be still placing these helmets on the market during inspections by MCCAA inspectors will be liable to legal action against them, as prescribed by the Product Safety Act.
