In today’s schools and kindergartens, flashcards are accepted as a fun and interactive way of introducing the youngest pupils to new vocabulary.

Merlin Publishers have launched a series in Maltese, aimed to help parents and teachers get the little ones familiar with the language in a fun way.

Called Leħħiet (flashcards), the series so far includes two released in the shape of colourful, boxed cards. The first box, L-Alfabett, is intended to provide a good grounding into the very basics, explaining how the Maltese alphabet works.

Each card denotes every letter of the alphabet in both small and capital letters. The letter is depicted by a word that starts with that same letter; on the other side of the card, parents and teachers are prompted to ask a series of questions to help the little ones focus on the language.

The vocabulary was finalised after consultation with experts in the field; the questions have been formulated in such a manner as to stimulate daily conversation in Maltese – an essential part of the learning process for young children. Every card also includes tips on how best to incorporate it into a game.

The other set of Leħħiet , titled Annimali, Insetti u Għasafar, serves as the perfect introduction to everyday Maltese vocabulary.

Like L-Alfabet, every word is matched with an illus-tration and, to aid grammer construction, the set includes a series of mini-cards with all the possible permutations of the article, both definite and indefinite.

Leħħiet was created using the highest, technical specifications, including CE safety certifications.
