The new centre for eating disorders in Mtarfa, which is being funded by the Malta Community Chest Fund, is set to open next January, President George Abela announced today during a news conference.

The event was held on the main stage of the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta which will be the central venue of this year’s edition of l-istrina on December 26. Other events will be organised at the new lagoon at Smart City.

A record sum of €3.3 million was raised in last year’s edition of l-istrina.

Dr Abela said that this year the Malta Community Chest fund handed around €2.9 million to 44 NGOs who got €900,000 between them with the rest being distributed to individuals in need, such as those needing treatment abroad. He said that the rest of the funds were spent to cover expenses and keep some money for the next year, when a new President steps in.

During the news conference the Office of the President published the audited accounts of the Community Chest Fund.

Dar Kenn għal Saħħtek which is costing around €2 million, will be located in the former Sisters Quarters in Mtarfa. The place which was in a dilapidated state is being transformed into a residential home aimed at offering a holistic approach to treating anorexia, bulimia and obesity.
