The number of full-time jobs increased by nearly 2 per cent in May when
compared to the corresponding month last year, the National Statistics Office said today.

The number of registered full-time jobs increased by 2,983 to reach 154,928.

Registered unemployment also increased, by 594 persons, to 7,292. As a result, the labour supply grew by 3,577 to 162,220.

Full-Time Employment

When compared to May 2012, full-time employment within the Education sector registered the highest increase, with additions of 960 jobs. During the same period, the Administrative and Support Service Activities sector also rose by 887.

However, full-time employment within Construction dropped by 527.

The share of full-time jobs within the private sector amounted to 73 per cent of total fulltime employment. Private sector employment went up by 1.9 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year. The highest increases were mainly recorded within Administrative and Support Services and in Professional, Scientifi c and Technical activities. During the same period, public sector employment went up by 2.2 per cent, with the highest increase being recorded within the Human Health and Social Work activities.

When compared to last year’s levels, the number of employees went up by 2,912 to 136,993. Self-employment rose by 71 to 17,935.

Part-Time Employment

During May, part-time jobs went up by 4.2 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year. The most significant increases in part-time employment were recorded within Wholesale and Retail Trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles  and Accommodation and Food Service Activities. On the other hand, part-time jobs in Education declined by 166.
