Two days after an Egyptian government crackdown left hundreds dead and over 3,000 wounded, reaction in Cairo to American condemnation of the violence was anything but enthusiastic.

Obama said normal US cooperation with Egypt could not continue while civilians were being killed.

"We deplore violence against civilians. We support universal rights essential to human dignity, including the right to peaceful protest…And today, the United States extends its condolences to the families of those who were killed and those who were wounded."

The US has cancelled a scheduled joint military exercise with Egypt, while it considers further steps.

Meanwhile, the violence in Egypt continues.

Yesterday, hundreds of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood set fire to a government building in Giza, to protest over Wednesday's mass killings.
