As of the time of writing this, there has been no judicial pronouncement on whether the chairman of the Malta College of Science & Technology (I may have the exalted title slightly wrong, it's that dentist I'm talking about) and the Commissioner for Law & Constitutional Reform (I'm certain I have the exalted titles wrong, but who cares, it's that Debono person I'm referring to) were the victims or the aggressors at the crack of dawn last Sunday, when a young law student had his glasses smashed, not, apparently, by either of these two worthies.

It may, in fact, quite well be the case that these two were minding their own business procuring a couple of pastizzi and a glass of coffee or whatever for themselves and their bosom buddies, when this thug disguised as a young man went up to them and started provoking the Bejesus out of them, so much so that Debono, from what I read, felt moved to advise those present not to touch the young man. Sort of legal advice on the hoof from an eminent jurist, so to speak.

On the other hand, it may quite well be the case that the young man's version of events, that Pullicino Orlando was behaving obnoxiously and that Debono charged up and added to the obnoxiousness, is closer to the truth, which means that not only would that pair be exposed, but also that someone has been telling porkies.

As I say, the truth will - one hopes - out when Malta's finest take a break from flipping burgers and squiring around blonde young ladies of Germanic extraction (sorry, couldn't resist it) and carry out the appropriate investigations and haul the accused before the Beak, who will then determine who did what to whom.

But - just like everyone else on the planet, given the torrent of comments - I have an opinion, based on nothing more, to be honest, of my assessment of the dramatis personae, even if "dramatis" gets a squiggly red line under it as I write.

Debono, on the evidence of his blog and the revolting comments he allows to appear below it, is a self-absorbed individual who is convinced he is right, whose friends think he is bee's knees and whose self-same friends don't worry about lashing out at anyone who gainsays their hero. As they say, birds of a feather and all that, so by his blog and its comments shall Debono be defined, and it is not a definition I'd like directed towards me.

Leading to the inescapable conclusion that when he said that "wherever I go, I am respected" it was lucky he wasn't testifying under oath, because this is manifestly not the truth. Quite the contrary, I'd say.

Insofar as concerns Pullicino Orlando, well, here the less said the better, because we've already had quite a number of episodes of less than salubrious behaviour reported wherein the only common factor was, surprise surprise, the ex-MP.

And, let's not forget, even if Debono and Pullicino Orlando are not guilty of any criminal offence (and they deny any such involvement), they are certainly guilty of a lapse in judgment that in and of itself renders them unfit for public office. They're meant to be pillars of society and paragons of solid virtue, or something on those lines, appointed by the Prime Minister because they are worthy of the position to which they have been elevated, not common or garden yobs like you or me.
