The man injured in a fireworks explosion on Wednesday was no longer on the danger list, the police said yesterday.

Raymond Sultana, 55, of Ta’ Xbiex, was critically injured while he was working in a fireworks factory Żebbuġ. He suffered first degree burns to 20 per cent of his upper body.

The police believe explosive material ignited when he was using specialised equipment to press explosives.

In the explosion at the 12th of May Fireworks Factory, which demolished a room, Charlton Mifsud, 33, of Msida was slightly injured.

About 200 petards stored in another part of the 12-room complex were not affected. They were meant to be used at the St George feast in Gozo in the coming weeks but may not be released in time because the factory has been cordoned off.

Mr Sultana is the licence holder of the St Catherine’s Fireworks Factory in Żejtun. He was not producing fireworks at his factory because of a large number of petards that remained stored there after the village feast was cancelled following the sudden death of the parish priest.

Another four men who were inside the complex at the time of the explosion were not injured.
