A man who threatened a warden after being served with a parking ticket was fined €300.

Carmelo Galea, 50, from Mġarr, parked his car in St Paul’s Street, Rabat and then spotted local warden, Paul Borg, about to issue a parking ticket. He approached Mr Borg.

Contrasting versions of what happened next were given but Magistrate Audrey Demicoli said she found the warden’s evidence to be more credible when he said he was threatened.

Mr Borg said Mr Galea swore at him, even threatening to beat him up. The warden said that, in the circumstances, he had tried to leave the parking area but Mr Galea blocked his path and then chased him.

Mr Borg said Mr Galea reversed his van to block the entrance to the parking lot and got out of his van again. The warden said he tried to calm Mr Galea down informing him he could contest the ticket but the motorist continued swearing at him until he left the scene.

Mr Galea denied blocking the warden’s path, claiming that the warden had threatened him with a second ticket if he did not leave immediately.
