An elderly man is in a critical condition following a crash at Tal-Barrani road this morning.

The crash took place at the intersection to Zejtun at about 7.30am. The traffic lights were reportedly off at the time.

The crash involved a VW Golf driven by a 48-year-old from Marsa heading towards Birzebbuga and a green Maruti 800 driven by a 75-year-old from Zejtun.

The Maruti, which was crossing the road towards Zejtun, was overturned and pushed into a wall with the force of impact. The driver was trapped in his vehicle and was rescued by Civil Protection rescuers using cutting equipment.

The driver of the other vehicle was not hurt, but both vehicles were extensively damaged.

The south-bound carriageway of Tal-Barrani road is closed.
