A delegation from Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin yesterday toured Times of Malta premises in Valletta and Progress Press in Mrieħel on the eve of Worker’s Day.

The delegation, comprising secretary Josef Vella, president Jesmond Bonello and vice-president Edwin Balzan, was shown around the €30 million printing facility by Adrian Hillman, Allied group managing director and Progress chairman, and Michel Rizzo, printing press managing director.

Chief operations manager Noel Galea demonstrated the various stages involved in producing printed material, including newspapers, magazines and advertising leaflets. The delegation also met journalists and editorial staff members during a visit to the new open-plan newsroom in Valletta.

Mr Vella referred to the Jobs+ initiative, the union’s bid towards making labour markets more active by giving people the skills to boost productivity and helping to mitigate the abuses on the welfare system.

An action committee will be set up tomorrow with responsibility for drafting a plan of implementation for 2013 to 2020. Since Jobs+ is a part of the Government’s policy, the committee will be set up by the Government with the participation of social partners.
