Malta managed to double its production of green energy in 2011 but was still some distance away from its target to produce 10 per cent of all energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.

Statistics published by Eurostat yesterday show Malta increased its share of renewable energy ito 0.4 per cent, up from 0.2 per cent in 2010.

However, the island produces the least renewable energy in the EU, with the next-worst performer being Luxembourg (2.9 per cent).

The 2011 average for member states stood at 13 per cent, but the EU has set a target of 20 per cent renewable energy use in gross final energy consumption by 2020.
