Borussia Dortmund leapfrogged Real Madrid at the top of Cham-pions League Group D after outclassing the nine-times European Cup winners 2-1 yesterday.

Poland striker Robert Lewan-dowski fired the hosts into a deserved 36th-minute lead in front of a sellout 65,000 crowd following a poor pass from defender Pepe.

Injury-hit Real bounced back two minutes later with a delicate lob by Cristiano Ronaldo over keeper Roman Weidenfeller from the edge of the box.

Dortmund then went back in front with a sweet, first-time shot from defender Marcel Schmelzer in the 64th minute after a weak punch by Real keeper Iker Casillas who had made a string of superb saves to keep his team in the game.

The Germans now have seven points from three games, one ahead of second-placed Real.

The Spaniards, with only one victory in their previous 23 games against German teams, went into the match without injured defenders Marcelo, Alvaro Arbeloa and Fabio Coentrao.

Ronaldo’s goal meant Real have now scored in 14 consecutive away matches in the competition, equalling the all-time record held by Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Ajax came from a goal down to beat Manchester City 3-1 and leave the Premier League champions facing a major battle to reach the knockout stage.

Samir Nasri fired City ahead midway through the first half but the Dutch side levelled on the stroke of half-time when Siem de Jong crisply dispatched Ricardo van Rhijn’s cross from the right.

Defender Niklas Moisander guided in a corner to restore Ajax’s lead on 57 minutes and there was no way back for City when Christian Eriksen’s shot took a deflection off Gael Clichy to wrongfoot Joe Hart 11 minutes later.

In Spain, Champions League debutants Malaga stunned Milan when Joaquin made up for missing a penalty with the winner in a memorable 1-0 Group C victory.

After Kevin Constant had brought down Jesus Gamez on the edge of the area, former Spain winger Joaquin drove his 44th-minute spot-kick high towards goal but it skimmed the top of the bar and flew into the crowd.

However, he made no mistake in the 64th minute when played through by Manuel Iturra and his low shot beat Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia and went in off the post to give Malaga an impressive three wins out of three.

It was a sweet moment for the 31-year-old crowd favourite, who fluffed a spot-kick against Real Valladolid in La Liga on Saturday but went on to score the winner in a 2-1 success.

With three of six matches played, Malaga have nine points, with Milan on four.

Zenit St Petersburg have three after their 1-0 win at home to Anderlecht, with the Belgian side on one.

Gunners stunned

Schalke became the first non-English team to win at Arsenal in a European tie for nine years last night as goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay earned a 2-0 victory to put them top of Champions League Group B.

Dutchman Huntelaar rifled a shot past goalkeeper Vito Mannone with less than 15 minutes remaining to give the German side the lead that their impressive performance deserved.

Arsenal, who had won their opening two games in the group, were subdued throughout as Schalke, semi-finalists two seasons ago, carved out the better chances.

Afellay then sent the home fans heading for the exits when he sealed victory late on.

Schalke top the group with seven points with Arsenal in second on six.

In Croatia, French table-toppers PSG extended Dinamo Zagreb’s miserable European run with a comfortable 2-0 win in Group A at a sparsely-filled Maksimir Stadium.

Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jeremy Menez propelled Carlo Ancelotti’s side past their overmatched Croatian oppo-nents, as Paris SG made it two wins from three to stay within touching distance of group leaders FC Porto and consign Dinamo to a ninth consecutive Champions League group stage defeat.
