Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, arrived in Malta this afternoon as part of the Royal tour to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

During his visit, he will take part in celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta by King George VI.

The key event is a Jubilee reception at the Lower Barrakka Gardens tomorrow, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne.

Prince Richard will plant a tree to commemorate both his visit and the Diamond Jubilee.

On Sunday, he will attend a re-enactment of the presentation of the George Cross to Malta in Palace Square, Valletta.

The programme of activities include a display of the George Cross medal at Castille, and a free commemorative concert by the National Philharmonic Orchestra at the Mediterranean Conference Centre this evening.

Prince Richard, who is here on his first visit, this afternoon paid courtesy calls to President George Abela and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
