Since its foundation, the Roman Catholic Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, by the right interpretation of the Word of God and by the Magisterium, has had the duty to promote and protect the dignity of the human person created on the image of God and redeemed by God-made-Man, Lord Jesus Christ.

During his homily on the occasion of the feast of our Sorrowful Mother, Bishop Mario Grech stood up to his duties when he spoke out about the sorrow of married infertile couples and the IVF issue. I thank him for doing this.

I also thank our Bishop for stimulating all of us, members of the Church and members of society in general, to discuss this sensitive issue in a more serious way. Now it is up to our mature sense of democracy to seriously and objectively reflect on what was proposed to us by Mgr Grech. I am very surprised at the way commentators that openly boast of their “democratic” principles contradict themselves in trying to silence the Church and Bishop Grech.

Arrogance, insolence or personal attacks on the Church in our islands and on Mgr Grech in particular are surely not helping in developing a mature and healthy discussion on such a sensitive issue. And may I remind all those who are bound by Christ and the Church to speak out on the Church’s teachings on moral issues like the IVF and the dignity of human person that they have the moral responsibility to do so urgently, openly and clearly on the example of and in unity with Mgr Grech for the common good of all Maltese.

Let’s consider seriously what the Church proposes out of love for us human persons! What the Church proposes to us is never ipso facto nonsense, as some of the commentators in the media proudly, but erroneously, write or say.
