An unemployed man who was stopped by a traffic policeman on Saturday allegedly punched him and fled the scene, only to be apprehended and charged in court yesterday.

Roderick Cilia, a 34-year-old from Żejtun, was charged with punching police sergeant Paul Falzon at 11.15 a.m. on Saturday morning in Villambrosa Street, Ħamrun.

He was also accused of assaulting the policeman, disobeying his orders, threatening him and relapsing.

Before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, Mr Cilia pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was granted bail against a deposit of €300 and a personal guarantee of €2,000 and ordered to sign the bail book at the Żejtun police station every day.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted. Lawyer Albert Zerafa appeared for the accused.
