A man and his son, avid supporters of the Hibernians football team, ended up in court yesterday charged with slightly injuring two policemen during a scuffle on Saturday.

The punch-up took place at the Ta’ Qali national stadium during the Hibernians vs Floriana football match which Hibs won by two goals to retain their spot at the top of the table.

Sources said the scuffle broke out between football supporters and carried on despite the intervention of the police.

Carmelo Callus, 53, and his son Jason, 20, pleaded not guilty to slightly injuring police constables Brian Casingena and George Buhagiar, threatening them, disobeying their orders and breaching the peace.

The father, who works with the maritime section of the Civil Protection Department, was further charged with committing a crime he was duty-bound to prevent.

Father and son, who pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them, were granted bail against a deposit of €300 and a personal guarantee of €2,000 each.

As one of their bail conditions, Magistrate Doreen Clarke ordered them to stay away from football grounds for the duration of the case against them.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted while lawyer Franco Debono appeared for the men.
