A 34-year-old Costa Rican was yesterday jailed for eight years and fined €23,500 after admitting to importing cocaine in 60 capsules, which he had swallowed.

Luis Fernando Penanaranda Soto arrived in Malta in February 2010 on a flight from Zurich. He was meant to stand trial by jury but decided to admit to the charges of drug importation and aggravated possession.

The drugs weighed in at 614 grams and were valued at about €46,000.
