A former police sergeant was yesterday accused of stealing about €30,000 in cash from the police headquarters in Floriana.

Adrian Lia, 37, from San Ġwann, resigned from the force a few days ago. The investigation into the theft began when the police went to retrieve the money that was evidence in cases of illegal gambling.

However, the evidence bags were found empty, sources said.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri granted Mr Lia bail against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €5,000.

Police Inspectors Fabian Fleri and Melvyn Camilleri prosecuted.
