A Filipino sailor suffering from severe chest pains was airlifted off a car carrier 15 nautical miles west of Gozo yesterday morning.

The call for help was made at about 11 a.m. when the MV Auriga Leader was sailing through Maltese waters. The vessel, which flies a Singaporean flag, was sailing from Jacksonville to Port Said.

The Armed Forces of Malta deployed an Alouette rescue helicopter and the crew winched the 25-year-old sailor on board, ferrying him to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.
