After reading No Maltese, Thank You, Amazon Tells Publisher (November 10) about Chris Grupetta’s disappointment at not being able to publish a Maltese eBook on Amazon.com, I had to write in to share my experiences. As he may know, I already have two Maltese eBooks available for purchase over the internet and am currently busy at work on a third.

I’ve been wanting to publish an eBook in Maltese for some time now but when we looked at the two biggest publishing platforms, Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iBooks, we were disappointed to learn that they don’t support Maltese books directly. Because of this, we chose to publish in PDF format, which also meant that the eBooks would be available more widely, rather than being locked into one platform. We decided to go down the self-publishing route with a website called Lulu.com. Not only does it let you create your own eBooks quite easily, but it also creates a corresponding printed version which can be sold through Amazon and other channels.

These first two books are Nies Kbar... Meta Kienu Żgħażagħ and Mewt lil Pinto! These books can be purchased directly from my website: www.cutajar.net/tony.

The great thing about PDF is that it’s extremely versatile. In fact, people who own a Kindle can download the book to their computer and transfer it easily to their Kindle. If you need a tutorial you can find one here: http://owen.in/syUKrW

I’m looking forward to collaborating with other authors in this initiative. As Mr Grupetta stated, the cost of publishing these books is much lower than traditional means as there are no printing or delivery costs.

It also means that authors get paid a higher percentage of sales on their work than local publishers normally allow them.
