Saturday saw the start of the 20-over Winter League and the locals’ last game against a visiting side in the 2011 touring season.

Marsa played Krishna in the league opener. They batted first and totalled 75 runs from their overs.

For Marsa, Mike Caruana hit a team’s best of 29 from the 29 balls he faced. The second-highest score was extras (19) as Andrea Caruana, playing in his first game, managed three runs.

Gregg Symons was the main wicket-taker for Krishna with three as Kevin Krishna, Tony Slater, Ronnie Sacco and Dhruv Duggal all took a wicket each.

In their reply, Krishna made the runs needed to win the match at the end of the 15th over.

Here, extras were the main source of points for the winners with 23. Nowell Khosla finished with 20 and Duggal 13.

Martin Llewlyn was the only wicket-taker for Marsa with two.

Thanks to their victory, Krishna chalked up nine points while Marsa received none.

Saturday’s second game of the day was played between Marsa CC and the side from the visiting HMS St Albans.

The locals batted first and were bowled out in the 19th over for 104 runs.

Justin Brooke was the main run-maker with 34 points which included three 4s. Khosla chipped in with 21, also hitting three 4s as St Albans captain, Barnwell, did some serious damage to the middle order, taking five wickets.

Jones took three while League and Glanville took a wicket each.

In reply, the visitors were bowled out for 74 with Barnwell again in the limelight, top-scoring with 20 runs.

Adam Krishna ripped through the visitors’ top order with three wickets and St Albans never really recovered after that. Gordon Hewitt took two wickets, while Darren Grech, Adam Caruana, Tony Slater and Robert Krishna took a wicket each.

The HMS St Albans team was the 22nd side to play at Marsa this year.

In all, 42 games were played.

The visiting teams hailed mainly from the United Kingdom as others came from Italy, Australia, Norway and, Holland.

The locals won 24 games, lost 17 and one game had no result due to bad weather.

The Winter League continues on Saturday with the match between Marsa and Melita Betfair starting at 9.45 a.m. The Sunoco Academy activities will take place between 9 and 10.30 a.m.
