TV service provider Go has acquired the rights of the UEFA Champions League as from next August for the following three seasons.

The rights are presently owned by Melita.

The company yesterday announced it had acquired the rights for all live matches, delayed matches, highlights on both nights and the magazine programme.

Eight live games will be broadcast each match night across its sports family channels as well as through mobile and internet.

Go also holds the exclusive rights to the Italian Serie A League until next year and the Barclays Premier League until 2013.

“The addition of the UEFA Champions League will give sports customers unparalleled choice, convenience and great value,” Go said, adding that this consolidated its position as the leading provider of sport content in Malta.

Public Broadcasting Services have been awarded exclusive rights over free-to-air Champions League and Europa League matches for three seasons starting next year. “TVM will be showing the best UEFA Champions League match live each Wednesday starting from the preliminary rounds, through the group stage and the knockout phase, up to the final: a total of 17 match days plus the UEFA Super Cup Final between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League,” PBS said.

TVM will also screen a weekly Champions League highlights programme and broadcast the best match each week from the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, with each followed by a highlights programme.

All the matches will be streamed online too.

“PBS Ltd feels that offering high calibre free to air sports is part of its remit as the national broadcaster. Over the past months, it has invested substantially in the upgrading of the sports coverage, with the setting up of a dedicated team,” PBS chief executive officer Anton Attard said.
