The potentially lethal legionella bacteria were found in the water system of Boffa Hospital last Saturday but the problem was quickly contained and no one was contaminated, the health authorities said yesterday.

The presence of the bacteria, which could result in a fatal form of pneumonia called Legionnaires’ disease, was spotted during routine health checks on the water system.

All the necessary precautions were taken and the area was sealed off, the Health Ministry said. Although only one part of the hospital was contaminated, the entire water system was treated.

Water samples will continue to be tested over the next few days.
