GO plc said today that a specialised ship is to repair a submarine cable between Malta and Sicily which was damaged yesterday - slowing down Internet services.

It said the damage occurred a few kilometers off the Sicilian coast. The repairs are expected to take between three days and a week.

It is thought the damage was caused by a third party and investigations are underway to establish which vessels were in the area.

"At this stage, it is not possible to identify the cause of the damage but investigations are now underway through the authorities," the company said.

GO said it had been able to maintain Internet service thanks to its other submarine cable and the support of other operators.

"Every effort is being made to keep speeds as high as possible," it added.
