Transport Malta is increasing some of its administrative fees relating to the registration and licensing of motor vehicles and driving licences with effect from July 1.

The actual road licence and the driving license fees will remain unchanged.

TM said in a statement that the fees it was updating were charged for a number of administrative services it rendered and had not been changed since 2004.

The revision of fees will enable TM to be less dependent on government subventions, and will also partly compensate for increases in driving licence card production costs due to added security requirements imposed by EU directives, as well as additional security enhancements being made to the annual circulation licence disc, vehicle registration plates and vehicle registration certificates.

It said that the revision affected mainly non-essential, which included customised number plates and personalised number plates.

There is also an increase in the fee for inspections of used cars from the EU. This is due to the valuation system that was introduced by TM which enabled customers to have a clear indication of the total cost of registration tax on any vehicle they intended to buy, before they committed to buying it.

TM said it was also facilitating procedures for those who applied online.

In line with the government's policy to promote e-services, there would be no increases in fees where transactions were carried out online.
