Former Police Inspector David Gatt would be eligible for a payout of €137,500 if a court orders his reinstatement as a police inspector, it was revealed today.

Dr Gatt had instituted civil proceedings against the Prime Minister and the Commissioner of Police calling on a court to order his reinstatement after another court found that he, and another two inspectors, were unfairly dismissed 10 years ago.

The possible payout figure was given during the continuation of the compilation of evidence against Dr Gatt over his alleged involvement in a number of crimes including the failed HSBC heist, the attempted theft on a bank security van in Sta Venera, the attempted hold-up on a jeweller in November and the €1m theft from the HSBC branch in Balzan.

Court-appointed expert Anthony Cutajar, who had been ordered by the court to draw up an inventory of all assets held by Dr Gatt, this morning presented his report to the court.

Defence counsel, Dr Joe Giglio, asked him how much Dr Gatt was owed by the Commissioner of Police in the wake of the unfair dismissal case.

Dr Cutajar said that he had received a reply from the Commissioner, saying that he owed nothing to Dr Gatt, ad that this was the subject of a court case. If he did owe anything to Dr Gatt, it would be determined by the courts.

Dr Cutajar said he had then sought a clarification from the Commissioner on how much Dr Gatt would be owed if he was reinstated as a police inspector after 10 years. The reply was €137,500.
