Artists from eclectic backgrounds will come together in an exhibition entitled ‘Realism Revisited’, featuring works by Maria Froman, Karl Froman, Madeleine Gera, Matthew Cassar and Anders Svensson.

The artists in this exhibition strive to show how not only abstract but even realist paintings can be original and dynamic.

Maria Froman studied art in the US. Having had over 25 solo exhibitions in Australia, England,Sweden and China, she loves the notion of personal freedom which is reflected in her works. She paints in a realistic style to effectively convey emotion to the viewer.

Karl Froman is a 26-year-old Swede who has studied at theFlorence Academy of Art and went on to study privately with the famous philosopher, businessman and author Chuyu Yue.

This artist believes that a greater understanding of cultures and philosophy are of vital importance to an artist. Froman is currently working on starting a classical painting academy in Malta.

Gera studied painting and drawing with Joseph Briffa. She was awarded a long-term scholarship to study etching techniques at the Scuola Internazionale di Arte Grafica, il Bisonte in Italy. She has taken part in several collective and personal exhibitions in Malta and overseas.

Cassar graduated in History of Art in 2008 and is reading for an MA in Creativity and Innovation at the University of Malta.

A self-taught artist, Cassar focuses mainly on figurative paintings although the years spent studying art history have made their influence on his practical work in a way that the intial hyper-realistic representations are now moving towards more fresh and spontaneous work.

Svensson is inspired by the works of artists such as the Italian painter Giulio Aristide Sartorio, the early works of Edvard Munch and the bronzes and marbles by sculptor Auguste Rodin.

Svensson also draws his inspiration from literature and films created by such diverse artists as Russian writer Lev Tolstoj, and Japanese director Nagisa Oshima.

He yearns to create work that not only depicts a realistic likeness to the subject, but also portrays a deeper insight, giving the viewer a reason to pause and reflect for a moment.

‘Realism Revisited’ opens at Auberge de France in Vittoriosa today at 7.30 p.m. and runs until next Sunday.
