Bundesliga goalkeeper Logan Bailly could face six months in jail after appearing in a Belgian court on an assault charge.

The 25-year-old Belgium inter-national appeared in court in Liege on Monday to be questioned about an incident in May 2008 in which a fan was left with a broken nose during celebrations after Standard Liege won the Belgian league title.

Both Bailly, who plays in goal for Borussia Moenchengladbach, and his brother Arnaud, 27, appeared before a court at Liege’s Palais de Justice on an assault charge after both were alleged to be involved in the incident.

Galatasaray want Terim as coach

Galatasaray, nearing the end of a disastrous season, have offered a three-year contract to popular coach Fatih Terim.

In a meeting of more than three hours, Terim, dubbed “The Emperor”, agreed in principle with the club’s new management, which was elected Sunday after president Adnan Polat resigned, the mass circulation daily Haber Turk said.

With two more games to be played this season, Galatasaray are currently ninth in the Turkey championship, lagging 36 points behind leaders and arch-rivals Fenerbahce.

Terim, 57, has been coach at Galatasaray twice during 1996-2000 and 2002-2004.

O’Connor arrested after drugs swoop

Scotland international striker Garry O’Connor has been arrested on suspicion of possessing cocaine.

The 28-year-old striker, who started his career at Hibernian and has also played for Birmingham and Lokomotiv Moscow, was allegedly caught with the Class A drug in Edinburgh during the early hours of Saturday morning.

O’Connor was detained by police but released without charge pending further examination.

The player is currently without a club after leaving Barnsley last month.

On Sunday, officers allegedly caught two Hearts players with an illegal substance.

Ian Black, 26, and Robert Ogleby, 19, were detained on suspicion of possessing a Class A drug and later released.

Veteran Weir to play on at 41

Veteran Rangers skipper David Weir has said he intends to play on next season whether or not he gets a new contract at Ibrox.

The 41-year-old defender cap-tained Rangers to a third straight Premier League title on Sunday with a 5-1 drubbing of Kilmarnock and he immediately faced questions about his future in the game once his contract expires in the summer.

“I will definitely be playing on somewhere,” he said.

“I have played something like 50-odd games for Rangers this season and I don’t think I could suddenly go from that to not playing at all.”

Kean on drink driving charge

Blackburn manager Steve Kean has been charged with drink driving after failing a breath test hours after his team’s 1-1 draw on Saturday which handed the title to Manchester United.

The under-pressure boss was travelling along the M6 when he was pulled over by Cheshire police and will now appear before Crewe magistrates’ court on June 7.

A police spokesman said: “At 8:50 p.m. on Saturday 14 May, Cheshire officers stopped a Mercedes car on the M6 southbound carriageway.

“The driver, a 43-year-old man, provided a positive breath test.”

Despite the impressive draw with the newly-crowned champions, the Rovers remain embroiled in a relegation dogfight with one match of the season remaining.

Japan cancel Copa America plans

Japan have cancelled plans to play the Copa America tournament in July, Argentine Football Federation president Julio Grondona said.

“We are sorry to inform you that the Japanese team cannot participate. We apologise deeply,” said a letter from the Japanese FA disclosed by the AFA.

Japan’s participation in the South American championships, to which they were invited to play, was cast into doubt after a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated the country’s Pacific coast.

The Japanese FA finally decided to take part, but then ran into problems with convincing European clubs to release their Japanese players ahead of the start of the new season.

Ba racially abused by Hammers fan

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has claimed striker Demba Ba was racially abused by a drunken fan during the club’s end-of-season dinner.

Police were called to the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane late Monday following dis-turbances at the £275-a-head event, which was attended by players and executives from the club who on Sunday were relegated from the Premier League and sacked manager Avram Grant.

Sullivan said: “It was one individual who had too much to drink... sadly a problem in British society.

“A player was racially abused by the same drunken supporter, which is not acceptable. Sadly one drunken supporter has let the club down.”
