HSBC Malta will be supporting Earth Hour during which businesses and households are encouraged to turn off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour.

Major cities and world landmarks will plunge into darkness tomorrow between 8.30 and 9.30 p.m. local time both as a symbolic energy-saving exercise and also to raise awareness on climate change.

Scientists have warned that global warming caused by burning fossil fuels on a massive scale could devastate the planet, hitting the poorest countries hardest with floods, droughts and disease.

HSBC estimates its own Earth Hour initiatives this year will save 80 kilos of greenhouse gas emissions. This is over and above other savings made by bank staff personally.

“Climate change poses a serious threat to our planet. Earth Hour is a call for action to every individual, every business and every community to show leadership and to take responsibility for our future. I encourage everyone to participate.” said Alan Richards, CEO of HSBC Bank Malta plc.
