Over two months ago I sent a complaint to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority about the development of a Maltapost branch post office in Mensija Road, San Ġwann. Seeing that the branch was operating normally after 15 days, I wrote again to Mepa and was assured that my complaint was being given due attention.

However, to date, no one from Mepa has bothered to inform me why the post office branch has been allowed to operate despite the fact that it was developed without the display of the necessary permits and has become a great inconvenience to the residents.

The branch has been developed within the premises of a sorting office. This in itself has been the reason for numerous police reports about the haphazard parking of post office vehicles especially when the postmen and women are loading their vehicles. It is an accident waiting to happen.

The local council has also been informed about this hazard and, yet, no one has had the capability to stop this daily pandemonium. Now people coming to the post office park their cars in front of garages, on double yellow lines and even double-parking is a common occurrence.

This state of affairs has all developed thanks to the fact that Mepa is strong with the weak and weak with the strong. If one of the residents would have tried to carry out any development on his private property I am sure he would have had a visit from an enforcement officer. It is no wonder that the public perception of this authority is that it does not fulfil its responsibilities towards the public.
