Fans of the popular video gameGuitar Hero won’t be thrilled at the news that development plans for the game have been halted.

This was confirmed in a post on the Guitar Hero website explaining that due to continued declines in the music genre, the Guitar and DJ Hero business unit has been disbanded and development of the Hero games for 2011 discontinued.

Aware that this news may cause concern for those owning the game Activision, the game’s publishers and distributors, have also set up a special Frequently Asked Questions section regarding this development.

The Guitar Hero series first appeared as a series of music video games in 2005, and featured the use of a guitar-shaped game controller to simulate playing lead, bass and rhythm guitar to numerous rock music songs, including hitsfrom Aerosmith, Metallica andVan Halen.

According to internet reports, the Guitar Hero series has sold more than 25 million units worldwide and is claimed to be the third largest game franchise after the Mario and Madden NFL franchises.
