Further to the new initiatives outlined during the PRS (Performing Rights Society) for Music showcase event held last year, PRS recently announced that it has entered into an agreement with BMAT Music Innovation for provision of music tracking services in Malta. The agreement was also announced on the official PRS website.

The system, known as fingerprint technology, monitors the output of broadcasters and matches this output against a huge database of music recordings to identify the music used, and the performers and creators of that music.

The technology will shortly start tracking 11 radio and television stations in Malta and will provide independent, accurate information of what music is used, thereby supporting and supplementing airplay logs that PRS for Music already receives from local broadcasters.

The technology will ensure PRS has more comprehensive data to match and pay works played on these stations, leading to more accurate distributions of royalties.

Members are required to upload recordings of their music into the BMAT system to enable the matching of songs as they are transmitted.

To obtain further information and/or assistance on this subject, artists should e-mail Martin Pursey, PRS representative for Malta, at martin.pursey@prsformusic.com.
